Jackson Hole News & Guide published this review of the Foxtail Books-curated exhibit Mountains to Manuscripts: Women’s Writing in Wyoming, in the December 24 issue of the Scene section.

Although the new exhibit “Mountains to Manuscripts, Women’s Writing in Wyoming” spans 1900 to 1950, it feels quite contemporary.

Curated with custom oil paintings, copies of manuscripts, photography and objects, the multimedia show at the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum juxtaposes the traditional backdrop of furs, trapper history and mountaineering with a wide-open white space. Viewers can make the acquaintance of four featured writers: Grace Gallatin Seton-Thompson, Elinore Pruitt Stewart, Katharine Newlin Burt and Sally Carrighar.

According to curator Christy Shannon Smirl, who owns Foxtail Books, each author provides a different angle on the Western experience in the early 20th century.

“One was a tourist, one a homesteader, one a novelist, and the last a naturalist,” Smirl said. “Not everyone has heard of them, but their books were well received and popular in their own era. “Each of the four also has a distinct voice and writing style, which the exhibit allows you to experience alongside Katy [Ann] Fox’s paintings.”
